North Shore Iyengar Yoga Certified Teachers Class

Our Approach

North Shore Yoga classes are based on Iyengar yoga, which Is a dynamic form of Hatha yoga. The intention of Iyengar Yoga is to improve and maintain the quality of our lives, using Yoga as a powerful antidote to addressing the stresses of modern day life.

A fit and supple body can be developed through the practice of the postures (asanas). These postures work on all the bodily systems, toning the muscles, stimulating the circulation & improving overall health.

Iyengar Certified Yoga Teacher - Glenn McBeth

Glenn McBeth

Introductory Level 2 Certified

Glenn attended his first yoga class around 1996, taken to a lunchtime class by his wife Di at North Shore Hospital where she worked. At the time he was still playing contact sport (hello, tight hammies) and had extremely poor posture and a bad back. One class was all it took to realise his body needed more of this!

Apart from the odd gym class, regular practice dropped off for a number of years due to work commitments, but he started attending regular classes again in 2010. At the end of 2011 he decided to start teacher training with Joy and is now a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher.

Coming from an architectural background he loves the alignment and precision of Iyengar Yoga. He has yet to meet the person that would not benefit from Iyengar Yoga!

Neil Mackay

JI Level 2 Certified

Neil is an experienced Iyengar Yoga teacher, recently joining the North Shore Iyengar Yoga Centre teaching the Level 3 class on Tuesdays and Level 1 on a Thursday night.

I started yoga 15 years ago as a way to “sort myself out “ ! It has worked. I knew the energy in my body was not balanced so I looked at different types of exercise & luckily found many excellent B.K.S.Iyengar trained teachers in London. I had moved to London when I was 20 & stayed there working in the music field & returned to NZ 27 years later. I am now over 50 & as one gets that little bit older the body starts to tell you of its needs & wants. I can tell you that the problems that come with old age can be addressed & either be avoided completely or managed very well by the correct regular practice of yoga asana.

I hear many different pupils say the same thing : I am not flexible my legs are stiff etc etc …. this is not the main goal of yoga … Quote sage Patanjali : “Yogaha citta vritti nirodaha” ( yoga is the cessation of the movements of the consciousness : B.K.S. Iyengar translation ) So yoga is a quiet mind. The stretches & bodily positions we do are done to maintain health , invigorate the system , quieten the system etc ( yoga asana are a genius system that can tone any part of the body – skin , bone , muscle , organs all are equally expressed in the position of the body & observance of your alignment , distribution of weight etc … the more I practice & teach yoga the more I am impressed by the beautiful mix of artistic, scientific & philosophical work which all blends in to make one a more balanced being )
