“It is through your body that you realise you are a spark of divinity.” ~ B.K.S Iyengar
Where it all began
Joy opened North Shore Iyengar Yoga Centre in May 1996 after seeing a need for a full-time Yoga School on the North Shore. Joy has been involved with Iyengar Yoga since 1984 when her own back problem brought her to yoga and found that the Iyengar Yoga system was the best thing for structurally realigning skeletal and muscular problems that were causing the back problem in the first place.
Joy began teaching Yoga in 1992 for Mande White at City Yoga and went on to pass her first Iyengar teaching certificate in September 1995 and in December 1995 went on her first trip to Pune, India to study with the Iyengars for two months. Joy went back to Pune again in December 1998 for Mr Iyengar’s 80th birthday celebrations and another 4 weeks of yoga with the Iyengars. In September 1999 Joy then passed her next teaching certificate and is now classed as a Junior Intermediate Level 3 Teacher.
In June and July 2006 Joy again went to Pune, India and in September 2009 Joy attended a Yoga Retreat in Australia with Mr Iyengar”s daughter, Dr Geeta S Iyengar, also a renowned teacher of this system. Amongst going to India and Australia, Joy has attended many workshops and retreats in New Zealand, gaining more and more knowledge over the years. Joy has found yoga to be a life changing experience for a lot of students, especially when a person is in a lot of pain when they first come to yoga and find that yoga can give tremendous relief to problem areas like she found in herself with yoga. It is such a complete system for body, mind and soul and anyone can do yoga anywhere, at any age and any condition.
